City guide

Sunyani

Sunyani is the capital of the Bono Region and the quiet achiever among Ghana's regional capitals. Known as a garden city for its tidy streets and green spaces, it has a calm, orderly feel that visitors notice immediately after the bustle of Kumasi or Accra. This is cocoa country, and the wealth of the surrounding farms shows in the town's easy prosperity.

There is no single blockbuster attraction here, and locals would tell you that is the point. Sunyani is a place to slow down: wander the central market, eat well at unhurried chop bars, and use the town as a base for the Bono regions, from Techiman's great market to the falls at Kintampo. Our business directory is growing in the area, start here for the lay of the land.

Sunyani guide from nearmeghana.com: verified businesses in Sunyani, plus food, sightseeing, and practical tips for visitors. Every listing is individually verified.

Getting to Sunyani

Sunyani sits about two hours by road from Kumasi, with frequent trotros and coaches. From Accra it is a longer journey, usually routed through Kumasi. The roads in this part of the country are generally good.

The town itself is compact and easy to navigate. Taxis are cheap, the center is walkable, and you will rarely need to plan transport more than a few minutes ahead.

Food in Sunyani

Bono cooking is hearty Akan fare: fufu with light soup or palm nut soup, ampesi with garden egg or kontomire stew, and fresh farm produce that tastes like it was picked that morning, because it probably was. The chop bars here are unhurried and generous.

Cocoa season brings a particular energy to town when the buying centers are busy. Our Ghanaian foods guide covers the dishes to order.

Markets and cocoa country

The central market is the town's commercial heart, strong on fresh produce from the surrounding farms, fabrics and household goods. During the cocoa buying season the town fills with traders and the market takes on a festive edge.

Sunyani is also home to the University of Energy and Natural Resources, which gives the town a youthful academic undercurrent and a handful of lively student hangouts.

Practical tips and day trips

Use Sunyani as a base and the region opens up. Techiman, with one of West Africa's largest food markets, is an easy day trip east, and Kintampo Falls lies to the north. The town's calm makes it a good place to rest between busier stops.

Our business listings are still growing in Bono, so if you run a restaurant, shop or service in Sunyani, add your free listing and help travelers find you.
