City guide

Cape Coast

Cape Coast wears its history in the open. This was the first capital of the Gold Coast, and the whitewashed walls of Cape Coast Castle still rise over the Atlantic, a short walk from the fishing harbor. The castle and its neighbor at Elmina are UNESCO World Heritage sites, and they draw visitors from around the world, many of them tracing family roots back through the Door of No Return.

There is more to the town than its past, though. Cape Coast is a university town with an easy coastal rhythm: fresh fish grilling by the shore, Fante kenkey wrapped in plantain leaves, and beaches that empty out on weekday afternoons. Every September the town fills up for Fetu Afahye, the festival of the Oguaa people, with a durbar of chiefs, drumming and masquerade groups. Use this guide to plan where to eat, how to get around and which day trips are worth your time, and browse local businesses as our listings grow.

Cape Coast guide from nearmeghana.com: verified businesses in Cape Coast, plus food, sightseeing, and practical tips for visitors. Every listing is individually verified.

Getting to and around Cape Coast

From Accra, Cape Coast is about a three hour drive along the coast road, and trotros, shared cars and comfortable coaches leave the capital through the morning. Most visitors arrive by road, and the route itself is part of the pleasure, with the sea appearing beside the highway as you pass through Winneba and Mankessim.

Once you are in town, the historic core around the castle and Kotokuraba is walkable. Short taxi rides cover the beaches, the university area and the road out toward Elmina. If you are planning dawn or dusk trips to Kakum, arrange transport the evening before, since early morning taxis can be thin on the ground.

Where to eat: the Cape Coast food scene

The sea sets the menu here. Grilled tilapia and red fish with fiery pepper and kenkey are the everyday stars, and Fante cooking brings its own classics, including fante fante, a rich fish stew, and coconut heavy dishes you will not find done quite the same way inland. Fried yam with pepper, fresh coconuts and charcoal grilled corn round out the street food.

Chop bars serve the home style cooking at local prices, while the beachfront spots are made for long sunset meals of grilled fish. Our restaurant listings are still growing in Cape Coast, so ask around for the current favorite grill spot, they change with the fishing season. For background on the dishes themselves, see our guide to Ghanaian foods.

Kotokuraba Market and shopping

Kotokuraba is the commercial heart of the town, a big lively market where you can buy everything from smoked fish and fresh produce to wax print fabric and beads. It is also one of the best places to watch daily life in Cape Coast unfold, especially in the morning when the market is at its busiest.

Craft stalls cluster near the castle for visitors, with wood carvings, paintings and jewelry. Bargaining is expected and usually friendly, so start below the asking price and meet somewhere in the middle with a smile.

Day trips and practical tips

Cape Coast makes an excellent base. Kakum National Park and its famous canopy walkway sit less than an hour inland, an easy half day trip (see our Kakum guide). Elmina, with its own castle and photogenic fishing harbor, is a short ride west, and the castle guide will help you plan the history side of your visit.

Castle tours take a couple of hours and the midday heat inside the dungeons is real, so go early. If you are visiting for Fetu Afahye, book accommodation well ahead, the town fills up fast. For wider trip planning, our Ghana tourism guide covers the practicalities.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cape Coast known for?

Cape Coast is known for its slave trade era castles, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, its role as the first capital of the Gold Coast, the Fetu Afahye festival, and the University of Cape Coast. It is one of the most historically significant cities in Ghana.

How far is Cape Coast from Accra?

About three hours by road, depending on traffic leaving Accra. Trotros, shared cars and coaches run the route all day, so it works well as a weekend trip or a longer stay.

When is Fetu Afahye celebrated?

Fetu Afahye is usually held on the first Saturday in September, with events running through the week before it. The durbar of chiefs is the highlight, and accommodation in town books up quickly around the festival.

Is Cape Coast a good base for visiting Kakum National Park?

Yes, it is one of the best bases. Kakum is less than an hour inland from Cape Coast, so you can do the canopy walkway as a half day trip and be back in town for grilled fish by the sea in the evening.
